Choose by hip, then check your waist. This short is cut close through the seat, so the hip is what decides your size. The covered elastic waistband is far more forgiving than the seat and will handle the size up. Going up one size is the right move if you are between sizes. Do not go up two, because the waistband will be too loose to stay put.
How to measure. Waist is around your natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso. Hip is around the fullest part of your seat with your feet together. Measure over a thin layer and keep the tape snug but not tight.
The Cabana Short and the Cabana Top are sold separately and fit differently. Plenty of people wear one size in the top and the next size up in the short, so measure for each.
Between sizes? Size up. Micro terry softens and relaxes with wear, it does not grow.
