Miami is 305, and it carries the most weight of any number in the state, because it came first. The 305 was Florida's original area code, assigned in 1947, back when the whole state shared one. Tampa is 813, in service since 1953 for the western side of the state. It now centers on Hillsborough County and the city of Tampa. The 813 is a Gulf-coast number, and the people who wear it are usually quick to remind you that the bay side of Florida is its own world.

Fort Lauderdale is 954, created in 1995 for Broward County when the area split off from Miami's 305. It covers Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pompano Beach, and the cities in between. The 954 is the stretch of coast just north of Miami that has always insisted, correctly, that it is not Miami.

The Palm Beaches are 561, which arrived in 1996 to serve Palm Beach County on its own. That is West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Jupiter, and the towns along that stretch. The Space Coast is 321, created in 1999 for Brevard County: Cocoa, Melbourne, Titusville, Cape Canaveral, and the beaches in between, with an overlay that reaches into greater Orlando. The number was chosen on purpose, a countdown for the county that launches rockets, and the people who live there wear it exactly that way.
