Florida Area Codes: What Your Number Says About Where You're From

Florida Area Codes: What Your Number Says About Where You're From

In Florida, your area code is a kind of last name. It says which city raised you before you say a word. 305 is Miami, 813 is Tampa, 561 is the Palm Beaches, 954 is Fort Lauderdale, and 407 is Orlando. Each one is an inside thing for the people who live there, which is why Floridians wear their number on a hat. Here is what each area code covers, when it started, and why locals claim it.

Florida area codes at a glance

City Area code Mainly covers In service since
Miami 305 Miami-Dade County and the Keys 1947
Tampa 813 Tampa and Hillsborough County 1953
Fort Lauderdale 954 Broward County 1995
Palm Beach 561 Palm Beach County 1996
Orlando 407 Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties 1988

The details below are drawn from the public record on the list of Florida area codes. The meaning, though, is the part that does not make it onto a phone bill.

What area code is Miami? (305)

Miami is 305, and it carries the most weight of any number in the state, because it came first. The 305 was Florida's original area code, assigned in 1947, back when the whole state shared one. Today it covers Miami-Dade County and Monroe County, which means the 305 also belongs to the Florida Keys. If someone wears the 305, they are claiming the oldest seat in the room.

What area code is Tampa? (813)

Tampa is 813, in service since 1953 for the western side of the state. It now centers on Hillsborough County and the city of Tampa. The 813 is a Gulf-coast number, and the people who wear it are usually quick to remind you that the bay side of Florida is its own world.

What area code is Fort Lauderdale? (954)

Fort Lauderdale is 954, created in 1995 for Broward County when the area split off from Miami's 305. It covers Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pompano Beach, and the cities in between. The 954 is the stretch of coast just north of Miami that has always insisted, correctly, that it is not Miami.

What area code is Palm Beach? (561)

The Palm Beaches are 561, which arrived in 1996 to serve Palm Beach County on its own. That is West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Jupiter, and the towns along that stretch. The 561 has a certain polish to it, and the people from there tend to wear it like they know that.

What area code is Orlando? (407)

Orlando is 407, in service since 1988 and the number Palmr was built around. It covers Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, the heart of Central Florida. We wrote the whole story of it in the 407, explained, if you want the deeper version.

Why do Floridians wear their area code?

Because pride in a place wants somewhere to go, and a number is honest. It does not announce itself the way a city name printed across your chest would. It just sits there for the people who recognize it. A 305 hat in Miami, a 954 in Pompano, a 407 in Winter Park: same idea, different flag. You are not telling people where you visited. You are telling them where you are from. That is the difference between a souvenir and a hat you actually keep wearing.
